How I Became a Work-From-Home Mom
Have you ever wondered how moms work from? I mean work from home as in FOR THEMSELVES, not an MLM selling oils, jewelry, clothing, or protein drinks.
Before my first baby was born, I wondered the same thing!
As I did my research, I discovered Virtual Assisting, and I dove headfirst into the freelance world, and I haven’t looked back.
Within the first year, I was making more than I did as a full-time Nurse and working less than half the time!! 6 years later, I’m still clearing 6 figures a year and working about 17 hours a week.
And I am sharing with you exactly how I got started!
My Biggest Turning Point In Life
When I was seven months pregnant, I looked at different work-from-home options. The thought of leaving my daughter in a stranger's care was terrifying to me!
I was a nurse and knew that lifestyle was no longer for my growing family and me, so I resigned. I did a little bit of contract work for other home healthcare agencies, helping them get set up and helping them obtain employees. However, I was still doing a lot of running around, a lot of traveling, and not living on my own terms.
I was still technically reporting to somebody, and it was not the vibe I wanted to live. I knew something had to change. So towards the end of 2017, I discovered virtual assisting.
My husband didn’t know what I was doing, nor did I, but I told myself if I could bring in $297, which was my car payment, then I could be a stay-at-home mom.
I poured every waking moment into starting my own virtual assistant business. It took me a couple of weeks to land my first client. The contract was for $1,500 a month; that’s like five times more than what I needed!!
I got addicted to getting clients and addicted to serving entrepreneurs. So from there, I quickly scaled my business to six figures all while working from home.
What You Need To Know About Being A Virtual Assistant
So essentially, what a virtual assistant does is handle the day-to-day operations of an online business for an entrepreneur.
Virtual Assistants help their clients:
Schedule their activities
Stay organized
Create a plan
Reach their goals
Inbox management
Calendar management
There are tons of different freelancers and virtual assistant titles. But a general administrative virtual assistant kind of does all of the above. When I first started, I wouldn't necessarily sell myself as an expert in one thing because I love to do all of it, and I could do all of it.
Can You Start Virtual Assisting without Having Skills?
If you are a mom, you’ve got the skills; trust me!!
You’re already planning activities, organizing others’ lives, planning meals, etc., so why not do it for someone else and get paid?!
And remember, I was a nurse. I came from wound care, paperwork, and Medicare regulations. I did not know how to edit videos. I did not know how to manage a calendar, Dropbox, or email system. I didn't know how to do any of that. Google and YouTube became my best friends!
If you check your own emails, you can check somebody else's emails. You can pay somebody else's invoices if you pay your own bills. It's very reflective of what we already do. Virtual assisting is on-the-job training for every single client that you get. You have to dive headfirst and figure it out on the go.
In my six years as a virtual assistant, I am aware that I don’t know everything yet because this is a digital world, and many new platforms are born to make our tasks even more manageable. But here’s what I can guarantee– I can help you avoid the pitfalls if you start from scratch.
The Virtually Free Academy can help you start your journey as a virtual assistant, find clients, and start living virtually free.
Next month I am holding a workshop: How To Become A Work-From-Home Mom, on February 9 from 11 to noon EST.
It's just a one-hour workshop where I'm going to dive a little bit deeper into my journey and how I started and the different avenues that you can do as a work-from-home mom. We're going to brainstorm together what skills you have and things that you're currently doing that you could be making a profit off of for other entrepreneurs.
It's going to be super interactive, and it's going to be a lot of fun! You can register for this workshop. IT IS TOTALLY FREE!
The Most Important Thing
Do you love what you do? Are you happy? Are your kids healthy and happy? Bam, that's it. That's what it comes down to.
If you love your job now and don’t want to leave it, then that’s fine! You can still hang around and have fun mom conversations with me. But if you want a side hustle or you want to completely change your career, I got you there too.
I am so honored to join you and help you on your work-from-home mom journey. Whether you're brand new or ready to scale, I can help you with both!
