My Summer Schedule as a Work From Home Mom
I love summer! I love having my kids home with me, going to theme parks, laying by the pool and building sand castles on the beach. I love not being tied down with work everyday & I also love hitting 6 figures in my business.
With summer break approaching, Kenzie has only two days left of school. This means the kids will be home with me all day, every day—a scenario I love and look forward to. But how do you get anything done with kids running around when you work from home as a freelancer? It’s simpler than you might think. Here’s how you can keep your business running and growing, even with kiddos in the background.
So, how do I do it all while making 6 figures and spending intentional time with my family? This blog will show you exactly how!
Key Strategies for a Productive Summer Schedule
1. Create a Solid Schedule
A solid schedule is crucial. You need a work routine that suits both you and your family. Everyone in the house must be on board with this schedule, whether you live with a spouse, partner, boyfriend, or even your mom.
During the school year, I have a flexible schedule, working whenever it's convenient for me. However, during the summer, my focus shifts to ensuring my kids have an amazing time. We visit theme parks weekly, go to the beach, and engage in various fun and educational activities. Despite these adventures, a structured schedule remains essential.
2. Family Approval and Adaptation
Your household needs to understand and adapt to your work schedule. My husband works from home too, doing something related to numbers and engineering. We need a quiet environment, especially since he works on high-level tasks. The same goes for me—I work early in the morning, starting at 5 AM, to get things done before the kids wake up.
3. Early Morning Productivity
Waking up at 5 AM allows me to work uninterrupted until the kids wake up around 8 or 8:30 AM. This early start ensures that I have completed my essential tasks, freeing up the rest of the day for family activities.
4. Daily Activities with Kids
Our daily routine is packed with fun:
Tuesdays: Theme park visits (we're Disney and Universal fans).
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: Breakfast followed by outdoor activities. We return home around 2 PM for a late lunch or lunch on the go. The kids then play in their rooms for a bit while I catch up on housework.
Afternoons: I prepare dinner, check emails, and handle any urgent tasks.
5. Designated Meeting Times
I schedule meetings for one day a week, specifically Wednesday mornings from 5 AM to 8 AM. I also work one night a week, usually Monday nights, for an hour or so to handle client calls.
Maintaining a Balanced and Fun Summer
Despite the busy schedule, we maintain a relaxed atmosphere. We stay up later, sometimes camping in the living room, and I still wake up at 5 AM to stay on top of my work. This balance ensures that I can spend intentional, quality time with my kids, which is the primary reason I started my business.
